MELA Festival of Learning 2012

The 2012 Festival of Learning repeats the huge success of the 2011 Festival and brings the different MELA networks together for an inspirational series of talks, inputs and workshops with regional and national appeal. This is a key regional event and places are on first come first served basis so book NOW!

RHS - The artisan's garden

This day looks at ways in which you can use a school garden to support teaching and learning within the arts. You will explore different ways in which a variety of artforms such as visual arts, drama and music, can be linked to growing and used to enhance your garden environment. This course is available to teachers, support staff, school governors and others who are involved in teaching and inspiring children about plants and gardening.

RHS - Using gardening and the outdoors to deliver the curriculum

This will be a fun and interactive day looking at how to use your school grounds and gardens to deliver the curriculum outdoors. The day will be packed full of ideas for using outdoor spaces, from tarmac to woodlands, to deliver quick activities to supplement current teaching. Creative curriculums around the outdoors will also be discussed at length with further examples of activities to be explored, including how to use gardening.

There has recently been growing concern over the food which today's children are eating. This day is aimed at enabling you to set up and manage a school garden with a focus on growing your own fruit and vegetables. This course would suit schools who are starting out creating at a garden as well as those who wish to extend the ways in which a garden area is used.

In the United Nations International Year of Co-operatives (IYC) 2012, we are delighted to welcome Co-operative Learning and Development Associates (CLADA) to share their experience, enthusiasm and energy for ‘Learning Co-operatively‘ with the MELA community. This participatory workshop will explore what lies at the heart of co-operative learning and support participants to reflect on how its transformative power relates to their own context.
