*** New course for school leaders ***

Connecting Leaders is a brand new course that stems from an earlier WWF pilot project called 'Leading for the Future' (see report below). The course has been completely revised and redeveloped by a team comprising the Peak District National Park (Learning and Discovery Team), Derbyshire Environmental Studies Service, Derbyshire Eco-Schools Network, and Lifeworlds Learning. The team have also been working with Dr David Dixon, David England and Zaria Greenhill who designed and ran the original WWF pilot projects.

This is a residential course comprising 2 residential blocks (3 days and 2 days) and in-school support in the intervening period. It is designed to give school leaders the space and time to think about school leadership and school improvement at a time of rapid educational change.

The course explores how values and a focus on sustainability and global learning can help leaders to foster or strengthen whole school vision for a more sustainable future. What kind of learners and what kind of learning would this need? How can a whole school (staff, governors and the wider community) be engaged and involved? What support is available for this model of leadership, how does it contribute to school improvement and how does it link to existing curriculum and Ofsted criteria?

This course is strictly limited to 12 participants and will run from October 2012 - March 2013, based in the Peak District National Park. To register your interest in the course please email or to find out more click on the PDF flyer to the left.

*** Opportunity for school leaders ***

MELA are pleased to inform you that a new opportunity has arisen for school leaders. Lifeworlds Learning will be leading a pilot project for the Values in Schools Alliance comprising Oxfam, British Red Cross, Practical Action, Think Global and National Children's Bureau.

The project will explore how values and and a focus on Bigger Than Self (BTS) issues can be integrated into the principles and practice of school leadership and school improvement. Six schools will partake in the pilot, but there will be opportunities for all school leaders to engage with the ideas and share in the outputs and outcomes of the project.

If you are interested in being one of the pilot schools or simply want to be kept in the loop with regards the project then please contact Rob Bowden by email or on 07814 873402.

Leading for the Future

Leading for the Future was developed around the concepts of "I, We, the Planet", on the basis that we, as individuals, educators and leaders, need to examine our relationship with ourselves, each other and the wider world, including the natural world. We engaged in deep reflection to this end, and we examined different concepts of leadership and education. We also used our hands and bodies, working outdoors and engaging with nature in sensory and observational and experiential activities. Pilots of Leading for the Future were held in October, 2010, with a follow-up in December, and March 2011, with a follow-up in May. Both pilots were evaluated and researched in detail and led to this report.
