New Secretariat for Education for Sustainability in the East Midlands
At a meeting of the UN Regional Centre of Expertise for Education for Sustainable Development in the East Midlands (UN RCE-EM) it was agreed to establish a formal secretariat for the work of the RCE in the East Midlands region. It is hoped that this will re-invigorate work around education for sustainable development (ESD) in the region and encourage new voices to emerge. The secretariat will be located within Lifeworlds Learning Community Interest Company and will be publicly hosted through their Living Debate portal.

MELA Christmas meal
MELA members met for a Christmas meal social on 19 December at Kayal restaurant in Leicester. The event provided a welcome opportunity for members old and new to catch up with one another, share stories from the past year and most importantly look ahead to 2012! There are plans for a spring social gathering in May with either a walk or a family fun day. Let us know what you think and if you'd like to help organise it.

Thank you to all MELA members who provided feedback and ideas for improving the MELA website. We have tweaked the structure of the website to take on board as many comments as possible and to prepare the sire for future growth. New Theatre in Education offer from Real World Drama
Real World Drama are pleased to offer a new Theatre in Education day to primary schools called 'An African Village Decides'. This highly participatory day is based upon the highly acclaimed Growing Global project of Village Aid and is delivered by drama specialist Helen Hunter. Learning for a Common Cause - MELA Seminar
The first MELA Seminar 'Learning for a Common Cause' was attended by 23 MELA members on 5 March and was kindly hosted by Mundi in Nottingham. Richard Hawkins from PIRC and author of the Common Cause Handbook provided a fascinating insight to the world of values and led to some robust debate that has been continuing ever since! We'll publish the outcomes soon. The next session is on 28 May in Leicester (see news item above) and will look at Co-operative Learning.

MELA Workshop - Cooperative Learning (28-05-12 Leicester)
The next MELA workshop/seminar will be produced in partnership with CLADA - Coperative Learning and Development Associates and will lookat cooperative learning in this International Year of Cooperation. It promises to be a great way to engage in this debate at a time when cooperatives are increasingly being looked at as a possible solution to some of the current challenges facing economies and societies. New MELA partnerships
MELA is continuing to bring organisations and individuals together to spawn new partnerships as highlighted on the Partnerships pages of this site. Recent collaborations have involved Lifeworlds working with CLADA on co-operative learning, DECSY and Lifeworlds collaborating to offer courses on SEAL and critical literacy, FACE working with GELS and Lifeworlds to offer a food and global learning day and GELS, SLN and Linda Ramirez Barker working together on Community Cohesion in the Leicester area.
