supporting and inspiring learning communities
MELA provides a space and opportunity for members of the community to come together in collaborative projects. MELA also seeks to build partnerships with external organisations on behalf of its members. Here are some examples of MELA members working in partnership. Let us know if you have a partnership project with another MELA member and help to showcase the advantages of a learning community.
youthXchange: climate change and lifestyles guidebook
This online and print publication was produced for UNESCO and UNEP as part of their youthXchange project and will be distributed to around 400 million 15-24 year olds around the world.
The research, writing, design and production of the guidebook was the result of a partnership between MELA members Adam Cade of SUSTEd and Rob Bowden of Lifeworlds Learning.
You can download a copy of the guidebook by clicking on the image left.
Education for Sustainability workshop day
A day workshop for secondary teachers was held in Derbyshire on 9 Dec 2011 as a partnership event between several MELA members and external partners.
The day was well received and the teachers who were present said they would appreciate similar such days in the future. Parties involved included Derbyshire Eco-Schools, Derbyshire Environmental Studies Service, Sheffiled Sustainable Development Service, Peak District National Park Authority, Make the Link: Climate exChange, Development Education Centre - South Yorkshire (DECSY) and Lifeworlds Learning. The regional Sustainable Schools Working Group were also represented at the event.

A day workshop for primary teachers is being held on 13 March 2012 as a partnership between Lifeworlds Learning and Global Education Leicester/shire.
The day course Reading the world...to read ourselves explores how picture books can be used to open up complex and controversial issues in the classroom and will include a range of activities, the opportunity to look at books, and a sneak peek of forthcoming new resources. Connecting Leaders: whole school, vision, sustainability, futures
A new residential course for school leaders working within education for sustainable development has been created by a partnership between MELA members. The course and project was inspired by and founded upon earlier work on a 'Future Leaders' course developed by WWF and Commonwork. Discussions between WWF and a Derbyshire based consortium led to the eventual development of this new course. The Peak District National Park (Learning and Discovery Team), Derbyshire Environmental Studies Service, Derbyshire Eco Schools Network and Lifeworlds Learning will together develop and deliver the course for the first time between Sept 2012 and March 2013. The flyer (right) provides key information and you can find our more by visiting the Connecting Leaders micro-site here.
SEAL & the global dimension
MELA members DECSY and Lifeworlds Learning have combined to bring DECSY's pioneering work around the Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL) to the Midlands region. In partnership with DECSY, Lifeworlds will be offering two opportunities to receive training on how SEAL relates to the global dimension and connects to new Ofsted inspection creiteria such as the Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development of young people. The courses will take place in June in Derby and Stoke-on-Trent and are very reasonably priced at just £95 to include lunch, a SEAL booklet and a USB stick with all of the SEAL Global Dimension resources.

Sharing innovative practice in teacher education
Dr Paul Warwick (School of Education, University of Leicester) and Rob Bowden (Lifeworlds Learning) will be jointly presenting a paper "Creative Collaboration – a new approach to teacher education for encouraging transformative practice" at the Teacher Education for Equity and Sustainability (TEESNet) /The UK ITE Network for ESD/GC Fifth Annual Conference on 12 July 2012 in London. The paper will dialogically share the emergence of new practice in enabling innovation and creativity in teacher education in order to reform school curriculum and pedagogy.
Co-operative Education, Training and Development
CLADA invited MELA (via Lifeworlds Learning) to join an experimental skype event that also included organisations and individuals in Bradford and Swansea, to discuss the state of co-operation as it relates to education, training and development in the UK. This has led to a fledgling new collaboration that will hopefully expand to include others as it develops and lead to future events. We will share any outcomes or outputs from this collaboration and partnership via MELA in due course.
